How do lead marketplaces like Angi and HomeAdvisor work?

Angi and HomeAdvisor are lead marketplaces. They collect requests from homeowners and pass them on to service professionals. How a lead is sold, how many businesses can receive it, how it is priced and what happens if it turns out to be unusable is set by each marketplace's own terms, and those terms change over time.

We will not describe those terms for them, because you can read them and we may get details wrong. Read the current terms and pricing on the provider's own site, and ask a sales representative to put the answers to your questions in writing.

How does an exclusive territory call model work?

In our model we own local lead assets, which are websites built around one service in one area. People who search and call are routed by phone to one business per territory. We do not sell the same call to a second business in that territory.

You can pay per qualified call, or lease a territory for a fixed monthly rate. See pay per lead and the flat monthly lease for the details. A qualified call lasts 60 seconds or more, comes from inside your service area and asks for a quote or immediate service. Wrong numbers and disconnected calls are credited back.

Which questions should you ask any lead provider?

Ask these of every provider, including us, and get the answers in writing:

  1. How many businesses can receive the same lead or call?
  2. Do I receive a phone call, a form, or both?
  3. What exactly do I pay for: a lead, a click, a call, a booked job or a flat fee?
  4. What counts as a refundable or creditable lead?
  5. Is there a long-term contract, and how do I cancel?
  6. Can I listen to calls or see the original request?
  7. Do I choose my service area and job types?
  8. What is not promised, and what do you say about volume?

Cost per lead is not the number that pays your bills. The number that matters is cost per booked job. Over a few months, add up what you spent with each source, count the jobs you actually booked from it, and divide.

Include your own time on the phone, the leads that never answered, and the jobs you lost on price. A cheaper lead that rarely turns into a job can cost more than a pricier one. Our own call volume varies by city, season and how long the asset has been live, so we cannot tell you your number in advance, and we would be wary of any provider that does.

When might a marketplace suit you better?

A marketplace may suit you if you want leads in many service types at once, if you want requests from a large pool of homeowners, if you are not tied to a single territory, or if you value a well-known name in front of customers. An exclusive call model may suit you if you want phone calls rather than forms, want one business per territory, and can answer the phone quickly.

Many businesses use more than one source. You can also read our guide to shared versus exclusive leads. If you want to talk through your own numbers, chat on WhatsApp at +1 (929) 450-3261.

Questions about local lead generators in United States

Are Angi and HomeAdvisor bad for contractors?

We would not say that. Marketplaces work well for some businesses and poorly for others, depending on the trade, the city, the pricing and how leads are handled. Read each provider's terms, track your own cost per booked job and decide on your numbers, not on anyone's opinion.

Is an exclusive lead always better than a shared lead?

Not always. An exclusive lead means one business receives it, which removes competition for that call, but there may be fewer leads and a slower start. A shared lead may bring more volume at a different price. The right choice depends on your capacity and costs.

Can I use both a marketplace and your service?

Yes. Nothing about a pay-per-call arrangement stops you from buying leads elsewhere. Many businesses test one source against another and compare the cost per booked job. Track each source separately, with its own call or lead count and its own booked jobs, so you can see which one pays.

What will you tell me about call volume?

That it varies. Call volume depends on the city, the season, the industry and how long the asset has been live, and some territories take time to produce calls. We will not promise a number, and we put our terms in writing before you start.

How do I check a provider's claims?

Ask for the terms in writing, ask to see call records or the original requests, and start small if you can. Compare what you were told with what you receive over a few months. Apply the same checks to us.
