Shared vs exclusive contractor leads: what is the difference?

Both models can work. This page explains how each one works in general terms, where each fits, and what to ask any provider before you pay.

  • Shared leads go to several businesses
  • Exclusive leads go to one
  • Judge by cost per booked job

What is a shared contractor lead?

A shared lead is a customer request that a provider sells to more than one business. The number of businesses that can receive it varies by provider and is set in that provider's terms. When several businesses contact the same customer, the customer can compare quotes, response times and reviews.

Shared leads usually cost less per lead than exclusive ones, and a provider may be able to supply a large number of them. The trade-off is competition for each request, which means speed and price tend to matter more.

What is an exclusive contractor lead?

An exclusive lead is one that is sold to a single business. In our model, that means one business per territory. We own local lead assets, which are websites built around one service in one area, and callers are routed to the one business that holds the territory. We do not sell the same call to a second business there.

Exclusive does not mean the customer has stopped shopping around. A caller may still phone other companies they found elsewhere. It means the call you receive from us has not also been sold to your neighbor.

What are the trade-offs?

Neither model is better in every case. Here is a fair summary:

  • Competition: exclusive leads remove competition from the provider's side. Shared leads leave you competing for each request.
  • Volume: shared sources may supply more requests. Exclusive sources may supply fewer, and a new territory can take time to produce calls.
  • Price: prices differ widely by provider, trade and city. Compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead.
  • Control: exclusive models often let you set a service area. Check this for any provider.

We cannot promise call volume, quality, close rate or revenue. These vary by city, season and industry.

Use this checklist with every provider, including us:

  1. How many businesses receive each lead or call?
  2. Is it a phone call, a form or both?
  3. What counts as a creditable lead, such as a wrong number?
  4. How is my service area defined?
  5. What is the contract length, and how do I leave?
  6. Can I hear calls or see requests?
  7. What do you say about volume, and what is not promised?

Ours are written up on the pay per lead page. A qualified call with us is one of 60 seconds or more from inside your service area asking for a quote or immediate service.

Which model fits your business?

Shared leads may fit if you can respond within minutes, win jobs on price or reputation, and want volume across many job types. Exclusive calls may fit if you want phone calls routed to you alone, prefer a defined territory, and can answer the phone during working hours.

Many businesses run both and compare. Track every source separately for a few months. For another comparison, see exclusive leads versus Angi and HomeAdvisor. To check territory availability, chat on WhatsApp at +1 (929) 450-3261.

Questions about local lead generators in United States

Are shared leads a waste of money?

No. They work for some businesses, especially those that respond fast and compete well on price or reputation. They are not right for everyone, so track your cost per booked job from each source and decide on your own numbers, not on a general claim.

Does exclusive mean the customer will only call me?

No. It means we do not sell that call to a second business in your territory. The caller may still contact other companies they found through other channels. Exclusive removes one source of competition, not all of it, and you should still answer quickly and quote fairly.

Why might an exclusive source give fewer leads?

Because one asset serves one territory and one business, volume depends on local search demand, the season and how long the asset has been live. A new territory can take time to produce calls, and some produce fewer than expected. We cannot promise volume, so ask what we can say about your area.

How do I compare the cost of the two?

Track spending and booked jobs from each source for a few months, then divide spend by jobs. Include your own time, missed calls and jobs lost on price. Cost per lead alone can be misleading in either direction, so use the number that reflects jobs won.

Can I switch if one model does not work?

Often, yes, but check the provider's contract terms first. Our pay-per-call model does not require a long-term contract. Ask any provider about notice periods, minimum commitments and what happens to your data if you leave, before you start, and get the answers in writing.
