Pay per lead vs agency monthly retainers: paying for calls or for services

A fair look at two ways to buy local marketing. One charges for calls that arrive, the other charges monthly for work. Each suits different businesses.

  • Pay per lead charges per qualified call
  • A retainer charges for work each month
  • Ask both what is not promised

How does an agency monthly retainer work?

With a retainer, you pay an agency a fixed fee each month for a set of services. Typical services include search engine optimization, ad management, website updates, reporting and content. The fee pays for the agency's time and work, and the results depend on many things, including your market, your website, your budget and your competitors.

If you run paid ads, the ad spend is often billed on top of the retainer. Terms differ between agencies, so read the contract for the minimum period, the notice needed to leave, and what you own at the end, such as the website, accounts and data.

How does pay per lead work?

With pay per lead, you pay for a qualified call, not for work. We own local lead assets, which are websites built around one service in one area, and route the calls to one business per territory. A qualified call lasts 60 seconds or more, comes from inside your service area and asks for a quote or immediate service. Wrong numbers and disconnected calls are credited back, and no long-term contract is required.

You do not own the asset in this model. You buy calls from it. If you want to own an asset, see turnkey lead systems.

What are the trade-offs?

The main difference is what the fee is tied to:

  • Risk: in a retainer, you pay whether or not the work produces results. In pay per call, you pay when a qualified call arrives.
  • Predictability: a retainer is a known monthly cost. Pay per call varies with volume, which we cannot promise.
  • Ownership: a retainer may build your own website, reviews and brand. Pay per call does not.
  • Scope: an agency can cover many channels. Our model covers inbound phone calls in a territory.

Neither guarantees a result. Call volume, close rates and revenue vary by city, season and industry.

Ask an agency or any lead provider, including us, the following:

  1. What exactly do I pay for each month?
  2. What are the minimum term and the notice to cancel?
  3. What do I own at the end?
  4. How do you report, and can I see the raw call data?
  5. Who does the work, and who answers my questions?
  6. What is not promised, and how do you talk about volume?

Get the answers in writing, and compare the cost of each option per booked job after a few months.

When might a retainer suit you better?

A retainer may suit you if you want to build a brand and a website that you own, if you need several channels managed together, or if you want a long-term partner who learns your business. Pay per call may suit you if you want to pay for calls received, want to test a territory without a long contract, and can answer the phone quickly.

They are not mutually exclusive. Some businesses keep an agency for their own site and buy calls on top. To talk it through, chat on WhatsApp at +1 (929) 450-3261 with your industry and city.

Questions about local lead generators in United States

Is pay per lead cheaper than a retainer?

It depends. The cost per qualified call can be higher or lower than what a retainer works out to per job, depending on call volume, close rate and the market. Compare cost per booked job over several months, not the headline fee.

Do agencies promise results?

Terms differ, so ask. Be cautious with any promise that is not written into the contract, from an agency or from us. We make no promise on call volume, lead quality, close rate or revenue, and we say so before you start.

Will I own anything with pay per lead?

No. In the pay-per-call model we own the lead assets and you buy qualified calls from them. If owning an asset matters to you, a retainer or a turnkey system may fit better. Ask who owns what in writing before you start.

Can I do both at the same time?

Yes. Some businesses keep an agency for their own website, reviews and ads, and also buy exclusive calls for one territory as an extra source of work. Track each separately so you can see what each one returns in booked jobs.

What does a qualified call mean?

It is a call of 60 seconds or more from a caller inside your service area who is asking for a quote or immediate service. Wrong numbers and disconnected calls are credited back, and the definition is confirmed in writing before you start, so you can check each invoice against it.
